Back in 1970’s the process of decaffeination was considered harmful. Nowadays, decaf coffee is considered a healthy option. There are three different ways to make decaf coffee.
1. 1. CO2 method
When coffee
beans are soaked in CO2, it loses all the caffeine. After this process, CO2 runs through a charcoal filter in order to make it reusable by removing the caffeine. This
is an expensive method and thus lacks popularity.
2. 2. The Chemical Solvent Method
For a couple of hours, the coffee beans get soaked in boiling water. The collected
liquid is then transferred into a tank containing Methylene Chloride. The same
beans again reabsorb the brewed concentrate. Although it is a quick method, it
ruins the quality of coffee.
3. 3. Swiss Water Method
For long
hours, coffee beans are soaked in hot water. Using charcoal filtration,
green coffee extract starts to collect all the caffeine. The warm water
extracts the caffeine. This method is not quick, however, the quality of the
beans is preserved in the best way.
